  • Overview

    Per diem flight nurses must meet the same employment and professional requirements as full time flight nurses.  The per diem flight nurse is accountable for the completion of all work assignments as defined within the Flight Nurse Job Description and is responsible for maintaining compliance with all policies and procedures set forth by CALSTAR. It is the responsibility of the individual flight nurse to ensure these requirements are met and to understand the consequences in failing to meet these standards.

    Responsibilities

     

    PER DIEM FLIGHT SHIFTS:

    1. Per diem flight nurses must be scheduled for at least 48 hours per month at 1) their home base 2) within their region or 3) any CALSTAR base with CFN approval. The exception to this requirement is if CALSTAR does not have shifts open.
    • Regions

                    o Region One – CALSTAR 3, 6, 70

    o Region Two – CALSTAR 1, 4

    o Region Three – CALSTAR 2, 5, 7

    o Region Four – CALSTAR 12, 13, 2

    1. Per diem flight nurses will work with their CFN to schedule CALSTAR shift time.
    2. Per diem flight nurses are responsible for scheduling time to complete mandatory education, rotations, CQI meetings, and skills verification.

     

    CRITERIA AND REQUIREMENTS FOR PER DIEM STATUS:

     

    1. Three years minimum current or recent full time employment at CALSTAR as a flight nurse, or equivalent as judged by the Director of Medical Operations and Medical Director.
    2. Must maintain all licensure and certification requirements as stated in the flight nurse job description.
      • Certifications paid by the per diem nurse’s primary employer will not be reimbursed by CALSTAR.
    1. Must attend at least 75% of annual monthly staff meetings in person at primary base assigned or regional base with CFN approval.
    2. Must complete all rotations and educational requirements as defined in the Flight Nurse Job Description unless otherwise directed by the DMO.

    Qualifications

     

    Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
    • Current unrestricted RN license in State of practice.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of emergency/critical care experience (>1 year of adult ICU preferred).
    • PICU, NICU and CCT experience desirable.
    • Current AHA ACLS, BCLS, PALS and NRP verified.
    • CEN, CCRN, CFRN and MICN recommended for entry-level position.
    • National certification in specialty area required within one (1) years of hire.
    • BTLS, ITLS, PHTLS, TNCC or TNATC required within six (6) months. 

    Requirements

    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Ability to communicate professionally, effectively and persuasively.
    • Ability to maintain composure under pressure, works efficiently and accurately with frequent interruptions, and set and reset multiple priorities.
    • Remains cognizant of local EMS county protocols and requirements.
    • Presents a professional image as a CALSTAR flight team member.
    • Maintains a positive team attitude and cohesive working relationship with paramedic, respiratory therapist, pilot, and maintenance technician and communication specialist.
    • Works independently and tolerates high stress levels while maintaining a good rapport with co-workers.
    • Maintains ongoing knowledge of relevant aviation SOP’s.
    • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft suite of software.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Requires activities requiring a moderate amount of standing, sitting and walking.
    • Able to conduct activities requiring a moderate to rigorous amount of static pushing, pulling, reaching and lifting.
    • Capable of lifting 75 lbs floor to bench height.
    • Ability to hear routine aircraft noises.
    • Maintains a “duty” weight (body weight + uniform/equipment) of less than 230 lbs.
    • Periodic hands to key ability (typing).
